Studio Home is an extension of a 15 year business career in which Robin specialized in building and financing small, high-growth companies, and a lifetime of passion for art and design. Through Studio Home, she hopes to bring a fresh, contemporary, eclectic and accessible design concept to Marin County and beyond.
When I saw this room in the walk through, it felt like a small refuge in the large home, and the coziness of the room appealed to me. I immediately envisioned an unusual bed configuration that took advantage of the back corner wherein I see a soft upholstered right angled head board, much like an enlarged chaise lounge. One can sleep looking out toward the water or sit against either wall. I like the way this configuration leaves the water side of the room for lounging, working, stretching.
My design uses an unusual, color palette which is intended to excite the onlookers, after seeing several bedrooms in a row. The design incorporates several textures, many of the newest fabric introductions, and custom furniture pieces, intended to create interest and softness against the warm woods, glass and tile throughout the house. The actual design will have art, lighting and accessories that will accentuate the overall design which is intended to be sophisticated, bright and classically fashionable.

Dining Room Owners Entry
I am honored to design the dining room at the Marin Designer Showcase House for 2011. The room has beautiful scale and architectural detailing and looks out on to the most spectacular view of the Marin headlands, both bridges, and the entirety of San Francisco. There is nothing more inspirational than where we live. Therefore, I plan to use colors, elements, reflection, light, and nature drawn intimately from the landscape. I see luxurious fabrics, sparkling crystal, painted finishes, and textural accents in shades of earth tones with gold and silver accents.
Candace Barnes is the creative director and principle of Candace Barnes Antiques, Candace Barnes Design Studio, and Candace Barnes Now; a high-end custom furniture line.
Candace grew up with a love of nature, music, literature, and the arts. She attended Syracuse University where she received an interior design/architecture degree. Upon graduation, she moved to San Francisco. After her arrival in San Francisco, she studied art at the Academy of Art, the Art Institute, and City College. She became a fine artist of large expressionist oil paintings.
Candace has a 3000 square foot showroom featuring 18th-20th century continental antiques. She also has a showroom at the Galleria in the design center featuring her furniture line combined with a contemporary art gallery.
Her design philosophy is to create beautiful interiors that encompass both the masculine and feminine. These creative interiors are tailored and highly spiritual expressions using elements of nature, old world techniques, and a successful mix of contemporary art and artifacts with antiques. The end result creates calm and spiritual interiors that are inspirational.

Interiors and Staging
San Francisco, CA
415-673-8660
Jim Coch, formerly from the mid-west, projects span the country from coast to coast and is representative of a commitment to mastering the varied disciplines of design. Modern, romantic and ethereal themes inspired the two intimate spaces this year.
All walls within the three-room suite (with exception of the tiled wall behind the vanity) will have minimal large-scale wall drawn sketches in black and white, occasionally reaching up onto the ceiling. Two large-scale reverse paintings on glass (a contemporary variant of traditional Eglomise treatment) will be hung, slightly extending out from the wall, one on the rear wall in the water closet and one on the wall opposite the lavatory vanity. These plates of painted glass will act as focal points depicting even larger-scale botanicals, painted in vibrant full color and will be in stark contrast to the simple graphic treatment of the walls and will tastefully complement the beautiful existing wall tile treatment and stunning floor.
For the family powder room we've decided to paint a large scale plaster landscape that depicts a panoramic scene in soft, muted colors. With references to sustainable resources, a custom made bamboo and wood see-thru screen will be added to act as a definitive focal point for the room.
With the addition of select furnishings and accessories the character of both design spaces will be refreshingly modern.

San Anselmo, CA 94960

Colin Daly is a third generation San Franciscan, Designer and Horseman. Colin grew up in the Craftsman influenced country-side of Sonoma County where he learned at an early age about equestrain facility layout and construction. His early design influences include and eclectic combination of landscape, traditional Japanese and modern wood construction.
As an avid world traveler, the bazaars of Africa and India have offered a riot of color and textural inspirations to Colin's work. Each trip abroad expands and helps to develop his design aesthetic.
Colin has been a business owner; training and coaching hunters and jumpers. It is through this work that Colin returned to the Arts and Design.
Colin embarked in remodeling efforts at each horse facility he worked; redesigning arenas, landscaping and interior spaces and has designed interiors and consulted on facility layout for private equestrain estates.
He holds an undergraduate degree in International Relations from UC Davis and is completing his MFA in Interior Architecture and Design at Academy of Art Univeristy, San Francisco.
Freedom of movement and energy juxtaposed with the power of nature. This combination and its resulting balance were our design inspirations for the exercise room and spa.
Katie Denham
Katie Denham Interiors
Sacramento, CA
916-452-1916
Katie Denham has built a loyal following over the last 20 plus years for her fresh approach to classic design. "relaxed sophistication with a sense of humor" is how Katie's work has been described. Katie Denham Interiors has completed creatively driven commercial, restaurant and residential projects earning numerous design awards and media mentions.
This year's Marin Designers Showcase house has been likened by the property owner to an ocean liner set on the edge of the San Francisco Bay. We have taken this thought and designed a modern "stateroom", at once classic and contemporary. Katie Denham Interiors has designed furniture pieces with a modern interpretation of the grand Art Deco era yachts. The mahogany and steel canopy bed and desk will be constructed by master craftsman.
Vintage French leather smoking chairs will give an inviting place to relax with a cocktail close at hand sitting on top of custom steel and lacquer accent table by Paul Benson. The over scaled art photograph by James Bleecker, "Intrepid 2", sets the stage for a nautical adventure. Modern wall sculpture, "Seven" by Stuart Alen, gives the feeling of setting sail at any moment. The mahogany floors of the house will be enhanced with a luxurious wool area rug in camel and ivory tones.
Thank you to all of our very talented and generous artisans and vendors!

Lindy Donnelly arrived into the field of interior design via an extensive prior career as a fashion designer. As a graduate of Rhode Island School of Design, she worked in the fashion industry in New York as a designer for a wide range of companies for many years, most notably as head designer for Tommy Hilfiger, Inc.
What a fortunate visitor who is invited to reside in the Guest Suite. To fall asleep and wake up to the gorgeous views of the city, bay and Golden Gate Bridge right outside the window. One could be mesmerized by watching the variety of activity outdoors from delicate sailboats and colossal ocean liners gliding past, to the array of sea birds and an occasional harbor seal.
Gazing at the scenery with its ever changing light is a unique experience with each observation. Inspiration was easily derived from the landscape.
The water's shifting colors of greens, blues and grays gave impetus to the palette in the room. An abundance of textures and patterns intermingle; from the pebbled surface of the shagreen nightstands to the watery motif of the Ikat rug. Shimmering abaca wallpaper envelopes the room and adds another dimension. The Adam's bed with its strong geometric frame in cerused oak is complimented by glass table lamps flanking each side. Luxurious Frette bedding creates balance to the surrounding, earthier elements.

Julie is a 5th generation San Franciscan who shares a deep connection with the people and places of the Bay Area. Her formal education includes art history at Pomona College, training at Sotheby's in New York and a Masters in Interior Architecture & Design from AAU. This foundation combined with a career at JPMorgan in Human Resources blends her two passions: people and design. "People should be happy where they live and work. It's that simple!"
Freedom of movement and energy juxtaposed with the power of nature. This combination and its resulting balance were our design inspirations for the exercise room and spa.
The materials and the equipment selections reflect the simplicity and strength of the exterior views and also take into consideration the work it takes to create a healthy mind, body and spirit.
In addition to the long mirrored wall, the exercise room features a reflective brushed metal ceiling, sleek modern exercise equipment, a moveable bench and repurposed storage for equipment. A punch or two of international orange will provide energy and color interest along with carefully selected art. The views can't help but remind us about the need for sustainability in design and lifestyle.

Creating a View and Focal point for the space, a Mural depicting local landmark Mt. Tamalpais cloaked in mist covers an entire wall.
The North facing windows are framed with tailored fabric valances in a natural linen fabric.
A classic modern Table Desk veneered in exotic light colored woods faces the mural, while an inlaid Credenza backs up to etched glass Sliding Interior Windows. Hanging above is an unusual iron lantern to center the room, while a bright wool carpet anchors the desk area. A reading nook near the mural features a comfortable but small-scaled chair and book table.
The walls are enhanced by a collection of framed "Tamalpais" Watercolors and a group of small Oil Paintings, furthering the room's theme.

Great care has been taken throughout the architectural design process to make the house feel very comfortable and very livable.
Room sizes have been scaled so that, despite the main house being more than 14,000 sq ft., the proportions are right-sized to keep the scale from feeling overwhelming. And the importance of having a warm, elegant and especially timeless feel cannot be overstated.
Kriste Michelini, started Kriste Michelini Interiors in 2004 with the goal of inspiring and enriching clients' lives by creating classic well edited spaces that are both beautiful as well as functional. She has a passion for modern design that is fresh, warm, and soulful.
The girl of the house loves to hang out in her lively bedroom with her friends to chat, watch TV or listen to music. This is a bold room with contemporary fabrics of color in turquoise, black, purple, white and chartreuse. The graphic modernity of wallpaper mixed with ikat, geometric, patent leather and linen create texture and interest on the surround walls, reflecting her young bold spirit while confirming she is all girl. Featured Artist:Soo-Hwa Yuan explores the mystery of space through light and form.
"We all know intuitively that life is better when we live, work, or play in a beautiful space," says Miller. "Designers get to make that happen. It's a privilege and a challenge—and for me, a joy."
Our expertise in interior design can be applied to all types of residential projects, ranging from new construction to renovation to cosmetic changes. We offer architectural consultation, design and detailing, construction documentation and project administration, and all other aspects of interior decoration. We can work independently or collaboratively with other design professionals on your team.
When a place or a piece has been carefully considered, it practically vibrates. Or it can tell an involved story. Or it simply makes you want to linger. Steven Miller's residential, commercial, and custom furnishing design projects all carry the stamp of his expertise in thoughtful execution, and his talent in coordinating uncommon elements. His spaces are recognized for their artful composition; even when they flirt with irony or the unexpected, everything is in its place.
Miller's design is sophisticated and smart, and often reflects his broad knowledge of art history, architecture, and his love of the angles and forms found in pure geometry. There is also a deeply human side to his work: his spaces are comfortable, approachable, and vivacious and can be quite witty, which is exactly how many would describe the man behind the design.
Based in San Francisco, Ian Stallings is an artist and a designer who specializes in custom design, offering a full range of Interior Architecture and Interior Decorating services.
He believes the client is the muse and the home is the canvas. His work is based on a real understanding of the client's needs, a love of the work, a wide knowledge of the history of architecture and of interior decoration, and a profound commitment to environmental issues. He focuses on building a meaningful relationship with his clients, making the design process unique to each client. The goal is to create a home that reflects the client's needs, life experience and aspirations while having a lot of fun!
The design Strategy for the Vestibule, Corridor & Scullery is to explore the dialogue between Painting, Sculpture & Architecture.
A series of site specific paintings will be placed along the length of the corridor, amplifying perspectival relationships between space and the visitors. The paintings will establish surface tension, color and the celebration of geometry, simultaneously engaging and challenging the architectural container.
A large scale anthropomorphic bronze sculpture will punctuate this experience and is intended to dimensionalize the emotional territory of the paintings. The overall experience will be one of subtle and balanced tension, encouraging the visitor to linger along this path.
Cecilie Starin is the owner of Cecilie Starin Design Inc., a full-service interior design firm that primarily designs high end residences in the San Francisco Bay Area. Cecilie brings her extensive training in the fine arts, decorative arts, and 20 years of fashion design to each of her interior design projects. She juxtaposes classic with contemporary in rooms that celebrate the unique qualities of her clients with comfort, refinement, and elegance.
Cecilie's work has been featured in Traditional Home Magazine, Paper City, and Luxe Magazine, and she has been featured in the San Francisco Chronicle numerous times.
Bella Vista is a guest room retreat that represents the intersection of classical and modern. It is a secluded place of peace and quiet that serves as a respite from the cares of the day. The room's color palette evokes a sense of tranquility: neutral lights and darks, with accents of watery blue-greens.
This room's modern art juxtaposes weathered materials and classical motifs that define the space. A four-poster wrought iron bed enveloped in diaphanous linen and a chaise with a perfect bridge view invite relaxation, while a classical desk provides a space for contemplation.

Previously residing in France, Italy, England and South Africa, Mr. Suzman has developed extensive contacts with the art world and landscape industries. Working with his experienced design team, Mr. Suzman excels in locating and obtaining such specialty items as antique statuary, newly commissioned sculpture, ornamental metalwork, custom tiles and paving, fountains, unique site furnishings, heirloom roses, exotic plant materials and hard-to-find specimen trees.
This project is a framework of relatively few, tough evergreen plants that rely on plant form, foliage color, overall texture to provide interest, rather than using plants that flower.
Plants that display many shades of green and ice blue (a variety of succulents) are punctuated by a few red-leafed plants such as Leucadendron 'Safari Sunset'. The plant palette blurs boundaries by repeating existing plants in neighboring gardens, including Podocarpus gracilior, Toyon, California Coast Live Oak and Myoporum laetum. Texas Privet, Olive, Portugal Laurel, and Boxwood hedges, all providing many shades of green, are repeated to achieve a sense of unity and serenity. Evergreen Magnolia and Jasmine espaliers are employed to cover and climb up the walls, while vines such as Hardenbergia and Red Trumpet Vine cascade over the walls. Plants used for their dramatic form include Mediterranean Fan Palm.
